Adult Male Red Crossbill by Constance Puttkemery. Red Crossbills are a stocky, medium-sized songbird with short, notched tail and an unusual, twisted bill that crosses when closed. Adult males are brick red overall, with darker wings and tail. Females are mostly yellowish below, brownish or olive brown above. Immatures are brownish above, pale with brownish streaking below.
Constance retired from the financial services arena when she moved to northwest Montana in 2009. She has traveled extensively throughout North & South America, Asia, Europe and has lived in India. Thanks Al. This bird is abundant in northwest Montana. It used to migrate through, but about 3 years back decided that it liked the location and has been with us ever since.
